Mill Valley School District

Message from Elizabeth Kaufman & the Board of Trustees

Dear Mill Valley Families,

As we return from break, we want to acknowledge the heartbreaking tragedy at Castle Peak that has directly impacted our school community. Our hearts are with our students, families, friends, and neighbors affected by this devastating event.

This loss is especially close to home as Kate Morse, a parent at Strawberry Point, died in the February 17 avalanche that also killed five of her close friends. The family has requested that we share the following statement, “There aren’t words to express the magnitude of this tragedy. We are grappling with this unthinkable reality, while focusing on supporting our children and honoring the lives of the incredible women we lost. For those lucky enough to know her, Kate was a dynamic and vivacious personality, the source of endless energy and drive. She loved her three children with a fierce passion. We are heartbroken but doing our best to stand strong and show love and support for everyone involved, which is exactly what Kate would want from us in this extremely difficult moment.”

We understand that news like this feels particularly heavy in a close-knit community such as ours. We recognize that we have students and families who are grieving, have personal connections, and are carrying strong emotions and questions as they return to campus.

School counselors and staff will be available at all sites for any students who would like someone to talk to, need a quiet space, or simply want extra care and reassurance. We encourage families to reach out to their school office if they believe their child may benefit from additional support.

Strawberry Recreation District has graciously offered the use of its gym from 8:00-10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 23, 2026, to provide an adult, child-free space where our school community can come together to support one another.

This space is intended to offer a calm and welcoming environment for connection and shared support. Counselors from Bay Area Community Resources will be present to offer support during this time. Parents and caregivers can also access additional mental health resources here.

At times like this, we are reminded of how important it is to lean on one another with compassion, patience, and understanding. We are grateful for the strength and care that define our Mill Valley community, and we will continue to prioritize the well-being of every student and family.

With care and sympathy,

Elizabeth Kaufman, Natalie Katz, Sharon Nakatani, Elli Abdoli, Michele Crncich Hodge, and Yunhee Yoo
