Safety Reminders

Dear Families

Many Mill Valley students walk or bike to school, which means they sometimes pass through parks and paths where they may meet members of the public.

It has been brought to our attention that there have been two incidents of concern involving students traveling to and from school in the Mill Valley area in the past week or so.

In the first, three adults (a woman and two men) were apparently arguing on the bike path. Though they stepped aside to let a student bike past, they made disparaging comments about each other in the student’s presence as part of their argument.

In the second, a student walking home was approached by a male in a car who asked a question about their location. The person then drove off. Two adults walking their dog witnessed the exchange and asked the student if she was okay.

Both incidents were reported to the Mill Valley Police Department and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Mill Valley Police Department is aware of the suspicious circumstances and is increasing patrol in the area during the hours of pick and drop off. There have been no other reported incidents.

Please talk with your children about staying safe. Here are some simple reminders:

  • Pay attention to what’s going on around you.
  • Don’t engage with strangers who approach you or make you uncomfortable.
  • You never have to answer questions, share personal information, or go anywhere with someone you don’t know.
  • If something feels wrong, trust your instincts, go to a safe place, and tell a trusted adult.
  • Walk or bike with a friend when you can, and let someone know your route and when you’ll arrive.
  • Tell a parent, trusted adult, or school staff member right away about anything concerning.

If you see or know of a safety concern: Contact local law enforcement directly, and let the school office know right away. We gently ask that you avoid sharing unverified information on social media, as it can cause unnecessary concern and make it harder for authorities to get the facts.
