Transitional Kindergarten Registration and Eligibility

TK Priority Registration Window
All families who are currently living within the Mill Valley School District boundaries are advised to enroll for transitional kindergarten during the priority registration window. For 2027-2028 enrollment, the priority registration window is from December 14, 2026 to January 29, 2027.

Wait list
Once assignments are made, a family may request to be placed on a waitlist for a different school.

  • You MUST accept your initial placement in order to join the waitlist.
  • You may only be on the waitlist for one other school.
  • The waitlist is active until the 10th day of the new school year.
  • Waitlist movement will be evaluated based on the same criteria as the initial placement process.

TK Is a One Year Stand Alone Placement
Transitional kindergarten (TK) is a one year, district-wide program. As a district-wide program, TK classrooms are allocated to sites where there are classroom spaces available and student placement does not follow the K-8 registration process.  Placement is based on the location of our transitional kindergarten classes any given year. During the open enrollment period, when your child is in tk, you will have the opportunity to re-rank your school preferences for your child’s Kindergarten through Fifth grade placement. You will not need to re-register in order to update your preferences.

Where is TK Offered?

When you apply for TK, you will be able to rank your school preferences.

TK is currently offered at four of our five elementary schools:

  • Edna
  • Park
  • Strawberry Point
  • Tam Valley
  • Old Mill does not offer TK

Do not rank Old Mill in your TK school preferences. Old Mill does not currently have a TK program, and selecting it will not count toward your TK school preferences.

Notification of School  Assignment
When you complete your registration, you should received an acknowledgement email confirming that your registration is complete. If you do not receive this confirmation, please check your spam or junk folder, or contact our office so we can verify receipt. (at the end of registration window)

Placement letters for families enrolled on or before January 29, 2027 will be sent out by May 1, 2027.  The notifications include next steps, including the expectation that you confirm your placement, and important information to help you plan for the upcoming school year.

We will continue to accept applications after January 29; however, applications submitted after the priority enrollment deadline are not included in the May 1 placement notification process. Families who apply after the deadline will be notified of school placement at a later date.

Please be assured that all eligible students will be placed in one of our schools. Our team works carefully to review each application and make placements in accordance with district policies

Considering Your TK Preferences

Because TK is a one-year, stand-alone placement, we cannot guarantee placement at your first or second choice or placement with a sibling, although we will do our best to accommodate family preferences.

🍓 Consider Strawberry Point

Strawberry Point has the most TK classrooms in the district.

As a result, your child may be placed at Strawberry Point even if it is not your first choice.

Before submitting your TK preferences, please consider the following for possible Strawberry placement:

  • Transportation to and from Strawberry Point
  • Afterschool programming options

The Strawberry Point administration and teachers work closely with families to help support families who have a long drive time or with siblings attending multiple school sites.
